Baking soda is a versatile solution that can be safely used on various types of fabric. It possesses natural bleaching, cleansing, deodorizing, and fabric softening properties, making it an excellent choice for tackling stubborn stains.

Pre-Soaking with Baking Soda To prepare your clothes for washing

, fill a bucket with water and add a cup of baking soda. Place your garments into the bucket, swirl them around, and allow them to soak for a few hours or overnight. While not specifically for stains, this pre-soaking method helps eliminate musty odors.

Pre-Treating with Baking Soda There are two effective ways to remove stains using baking soda for pre-treating:

  1. Sprinkle baking soda directly onto the stain and leave it for 30 minutes to 1 hour for grease stains.

  2. Create a paste by mixing baking soda and water in a 2:1 ratio. Apply the paste to sweat stains, rubbing it onto the affected area and letting it sit for a few minutes. For blood stains, apply the paste and let it sit for 1 hour. For vomit stains, apply baking soda directly onto the stain and leave it for 1 hour. For fruit juice stains, apply baking soda onto the stain, allow it to sit, and then rinse from the back of the stain. Use the paste method for dry stains and sprinkle baking soda for wet stains.

Adding Baking Soda in the Wash You can enhance the stain-removing power of your laundry by adding 1/2 cup of baking soda directly into the wash along with your regular detergent, or you can add it during the rinse cycle. For even better results, consider adding a cup of white vinegar, which will further enhance the effects of baking soda.

Additional Tips In Handling Stains

  • If you find yourself too busy to immediately address a stain and prepare a paste, don't worry. A simple solution is to sprinkle dry baking soda over the stained area and come back to it later when you have more time. As the baking soda sits on the wet stain, it will absorb liquid and odors.

  • When you're ready to tackle the stain, brush off the excess baking soda and start the stain removal process with a fresh paste.

  • For tough stains and greasy household stains that are non-acidic in nature, you can substitute water with white vinegar to create a baking soda paste. The vinegar's acidic properties will cause the paste to bubble and fizz, aiding in breaking down oils and grime.

  • In the case of pigmented stains on white fabrics, you can mix hydrogen peroxide with baking soda. This combination will create a bubbly reaction and act as a bleach to remove stains from colorfast clothing. However, it's important to first test this mixture on an inconspicuous area of the garment to ensure it doesn't lighten the material.
